Award-Winning Designer Beth Zaiken

The design is the work of award-winning U.S. coin artist Beth Zaiken, a member of the U.S. Mint’s elite Artist Infusion Program (AIP)—whose “Bucking Bronco” American Liberty design won Best Gold Coin Design during the Coin-of-the-Year Award ceremonies, arguably one of the most prestigious honors given during that event. Beth is also well known for designing the recent Harriet Tubman Commemorative Silver Dollar, the Greatest Generation Commemorative Silver Dollar, and the Honorable Patsy Takemoto Mink Circulating Women's Quarter, along with her nature/wildlife artwork and life-sized dinosaur exhibits seen though the United States. 

The Beth Zaiken Obverse

The obverse features a wild Mustang galloping through the Southwest in Ultra-Ultra-High Relief, paired with a Super Incuse sun at the horizon. Fourteen stars (seven per side) and the year complete the design. This combo of UUHR and Super Incuse on the same side is extremely rare and technically demanding—producing extraordinary light, texture, and drama.

The reverse features the official crest of the Mesa Grande Sovereign Nation along with denomination and coin specifications.

Each coin is approved for release by the Mesa Grande Sovereign Nation, denominated in dollars, and features the official crest of the Mesa Grande Sovereign Nation along with the coin’s face value and specifications on the reverse. 

The Mesa Grande Band of Diegueño Mission Native Americans is a federally recognized tribe located in northern San Diego County, about 75 miles northeast of San Diego, California. Positioned 3,500 feet above Black Canyon on a high plateau adjacent to the Cleveland National Forest, the beautiful Mesa Grande Tribal reservation is a remote location, and a quiet, scenic community just outside the busy streets of San Diego, California.

Proof planchets (blanks) are specially treated, hand-polished, and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes, then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck at least twice, unlike regular coins which are struck only once. The extra strikes give proofs a glamorous shine and make intricate, razor-sharp details of the design pop against polished, mirror-like fields. While regular coins are struck on high-speed presses by the thousands, proofs are individually struck by highly skilled artisans focused on creating masterpieces.
