Flowing Hair/Pillar Dollar Coin Highlights Spain’s Connection To American Independence

This coin commemorates the iconic Flowing Hair Dollar of 1794, modeled after the Spanish 8 Reales—the first true American dollar. It shows both the obverse and reverse of the 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar on one side and the Pillars of Hercules on the other. Originally struck during the presidency of George Washington, the 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar depicted Miss Liberty with wild, flowing hair. It was designed by Robert Scot, the U.S. Mint’s 1st Chief Engraver. The Silver 8 Reales Pillar Dollar is considered to be America’s first Silver Dollar because it was granted legal-tender status in 1776 by the Second Continental Congress—a status it held until the Coinage Act of 1857.
