GOTHAM CITY'S CAPED CRUSADERS STEPS FROM THE SHADOWS
In the second release from the U.S. Mint’s Comic Art Coin and Medal Series, a true American hero of justice and stalwart guardian of the innocent claims the spotlight. In a release unlike anything seen before, these proof-finished 24-karat gold coins and fine silver collectibles celebrate the long and distinctly American history of the comic book and its greatest heroes. Following the earlier release of Superman, this Dark Knight continues a one-of-a-kind U.S. Mint collaboration with DC Comics.
HOLY LOW-MINTAGE, BATMAN
This comic-art series features the first-ever half-ounce gold coin with a $50 denomination, a significant numismatic first. And the extremely low mintages of this release are sure to intensify collector interest: while the one-ounce silver medal does not have a set mintage limit, the one-half ounce coin is limited to just 10,000 and the 2 ½-ounce silver medal is limited to a mintage of 25,000.

A SYMBOL OF HOPE OVER THE CITY SKYLINE
These coins and medals are designed by Joseph Menna, the 14th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint who started his career sculpting for DC Collectibles. The obverse shows Batman in an action pose, bursting dynamically into frame while a fierce eagle carved in stone perches behind him, a powerful symbol of strength, vigilance, and classic comic‑era patriotism. On the reverse, Batman stands dramatically against the Gotham City skyline while the Bat Signal shines above, calling him to once again defend the law abiding from those who would do them harm.

With this Batman representing a milestone for the U.S. Mint, it’s only appropriate that it comes with exclusive labels signed by a pair of numismatic superheroes: former U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti, who preceded Menna, and GOVMINT ambassador David Ryder, the 34th and 39th director of the U.S. Mint who appointed Menna after Mercanti’s retirement. Like Menna, Mercanti is a long-time comic book enthusiast.

These coins are graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) at PF 70 for gold coins and MS70 for silver medallions, the highest grade achievable. Also near perfection is the feeling of both nostalgia and looking forward in this historic moment. Since Batman debuted in 1939, he’s been an icon for generations of Americans, and the depiction of the eagle on the coin’s obverse is a direct nod to the Caped Crusader’s patriotic messaging during World War II. Yet the look and feel of this superhero series evokes the most current achievements in coin minting. This combination of Americana, pop culture, numismatic art, and precious metals feels both classic and contemporary. It’s an event as memorable as Batman’s many victories against the forces of evil.
