This release draws from a powerful moment in history.

In 1785, French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon traveled to Mount Vernon to create a sculpture of Washington from life—a rare occasion when Washington sat for a likeness. The result was not an image of a ruler or monarch, but a faithful rendering of a citizen general—humble, focused, determined. The very spirit of the Revolution.

Sculptor Michael Gaudioso, a renowned retired U.S. Mint master engraver, created the new plaster for this project—a direct tribute to Houdon’s original. That sculpture is the anchor for this program and one of the finest portraiture tributes created.
