When the first strikes rolled out in 1986, the series wasn’t trying to reinvent anything. Instead, it leaned into the familiar: Adolph A. Weinman’s 1916 Walking Liberty—already a favorite among collectors—offered a sense of continuity, grounding the initial release in a century-old design language that still resonates in 2026. John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle reverse counterbalanced it with a more modern sensibility, creating a pairing that immediately felt purposeful. Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) has graded each of these coins as perfect Mint State-70 (MS70) condition and designated them as First Day of Issue (FDI), which means they were purchased within one day of the U.S. Mint’s issue date, and submitted to NGC within seven days of that date. Coins with FDI designations are in-demand because they are well-struck using fresher dies, and because that designation narrows the population even more.
