From the 1600s through the 1800s, Spain’s reales and escudos powered global commerce. The iconic 8 reales—known as the “piece of eight”—was the world’s first true silver dollar and circulated heavily in the American colonies. The 8 reales “Pillar Dollar” is so pivotal to U.S. history that it was the first coin featured in Whitman’s Red Book, the “Bible” of U.S. coinage.
Each design in this release created from actual specimens in the Casa de la Moneda, Spain’s national mint museum. These modern Proof re-strikes carry both their historic denominations and a modern Euro value, which makes each coin officially recognized as Spanish legal tender.

Gold Escudos Type Set
1780 1 Escudo “Portrait” Type
Features the bust of King Charles III, surrounded by the Latin legend CAROLUS III DG HISPAN ET IND REX (“Charles III by the Grace of God, King of Spain and the Indies”). The reverse displays Spain’s crowned arms dividing the face value (1 S), encircled by the Order of the Golden Fleece. This coin circulated during the American Revolution, influencing commerce in the colonies.
1715 2 Escudo “Cob” Type
Inspired by treasure recovered from the famous 1715 Plate Fleet shipwreck. The obverse bears the Coat of Arms of Castile and Leon in an octolobe, while the reverse features the iconic “Pillars and Waves” design with the motto PLVS VLTRA (“More Beyond”), symbolizing Spain’s reach across the oceans.
1770 8 Escudo “Mouse Face” Portrait
A rare variety depicting King Carlos III with an unflattering nose—so notorious that the King ordered most melted. The reverse showcases Spain’s crowned arms with the Latin phrase IN UTROQ FELIX AUSPICE DEO (“Happy in both, under the auspices of God”), marking this as one of the great rarities in Spanish gold coinage.

Silver 8 Reales Type Set
1673 8 Reales “Cob” Type
Struck in Potosí, Bolivia, this rugged coin reflects the earliest era of Spanish colonial minting. The obverse includes the mintmark and assayer initials, while the reverse bears the royal arms and the legend CAROLUS II DG HISPANIARVM REX (“Charles II, King of the Spains”).
1737 8 Reales “Pillar Dollar” Type
Known as the “Pillar Dollar,” this design became the model for the U.S. dollar. It was so widely accepted that even after the U.S. Mint began striking its own coins in the 1790s, this Spanish coin continued to circulate in America for decades. It is considered the ancestor of the modern dollar. The obverse shows crowned hemispheres flanked by pillars wrapped in banners inscribed PLUS ULTRA, while the reverse features the royal shield and the legend of Philip V.
1772 8 Reales “Portrait” Type
The first year of the famous portrait design, featuring King Charles III on the obverse and Spain’s crowned arms on the reverse. This coin was the most widely circulated silver coin of its era, traded across Europe, Asia, and the Americas—even after the U.S. Mint began striking its own coins.
