2024 American Gold Eagles, in Perfect Condition

Ever since the first pieces of gold were discovered at Sutter’s Mill in California on January 24, 1848, gold has played an important role in the history of the United States. Were it not for the California Gold Rush and mining that followed, our nation may have never become a world economic superpower. So while gold will forever be a symbol of wealth and
prosperity, it also holds a special place in the hearts of Americans, historians and collectors. For them, as well as myself, gold—especially American gold—is literal history you can hold in the palm of your hands.

And for decades, the ability to own that history was stripped from Americans.

In 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 6102, making it a criminal offence for U.S. citizens to own or trade gold, with exceptions made only for jewelry and collectible coins. It wouldn’t be until 1975 that Americans could freely own and trade gold, and another nine years before the United States would begin producing its own modern gold bullion coins.

Prior to 1986, Americans turned to foreign markets to purchase bullion coins. The world’s first modern gold bullion coin, the South African Gold Krugerrand, was first minted in 1967. Other gold coins from nations like Canada soon followed. United States President Ronald Reagan knew he had to do something, and so on July 9, 1985 he signed the Liberty Coin Act into law. This Act of Congress ordered the U.S. Mint to strike pure, legal-tender American gold bullion coins that came backed by an iron-clad government guarantee for weight and purity.

President Reagan certainly knew this would have an impact, but there’s no way he could have foreseen just how large that impact would be 35 years later...

The World’s Most Popular Gold Bullion Coin
Today, the Gold American Eagle coins (known more commonly as “Gold Eagles”) are among the most popular gold bullion coins in the world. Struck in 91.67% (22 karat) pure gold mined here in the United States, Gold Eagles have become American symbols of wealth and prosperity, and make up about 80% of all circulating gold bullion in the United States.

Part of the coin’s popularity stems from its flexibility. Gold buyers, investors and collectors can secure coins struck in a full Troy ounce of gold ($50 U.S. legal tender), or secure “fractional” Gold Eagles struck in half an ounce of gold ($25 U.S.), a quarter-ounce of gold ($10 U.S.) and even a tenth-ounce of gold ($5 U.S.). This allows you to secure the exact amount of gold you desire, all guaranteed for weight and purity by the U.S. government.

The Benefits of Owning Gold Coins
Another reason for the popularity of the Gold Eagle is its ability to retain value. Though gold markets rise and fall, the precious metal has maintained a generally upward trend in terms of value—one nearly inverse to the value of the American dollar. This has led many to seek out gold as a hedge against economic disruption. Gold coins are immediately portable, liquid, and bullion coins generally sell for only a small premium over the value of their precious metal alone. Which brings me to the collector market.

When a Bullion Coin Becomes a Collectible
When it comes to certain “key-date” coins like a first or last year of issue or an incredibly small mintage, collectors are often willing to pay an additional premium over the spot price. That premium generally increases if the coin has been graded and certified by a third-party grading service in a high grade. Today, the two most respected third-party grading services are Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) and Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). These companies grade coins on a 70-point scale, with a 70 representing absolute perfection. Once graded, these coins are sealed in protective display holders to guard their graded condition.

Why am I telling you this? For two reasons. First, it’s important to know what kind of gold you want to buy, and what the benefits of those particular coins are. For example, the collectible market is often more stable than the raw bullion market, and while the added collector value of a coin may vary, collectible coins are never worth less than their precious metal contents alone.

Secondly, as a special “thank you” for being a GovMint.com customer, I’d like to help you become the proud owner of pure, American 2024 Gold Eagle coins—and these coins are more than just the latest freshly struck U.S. gold bullion coins. They’re also coins that collectors are already scrambling to secure.

Historic American Design
Since its introduction in 1986, the American Gold Eagle has exhibited the same design. The obverse features what many collectors consider the most beautiful U.S. coin design of all time: the full-bodied image of Lady Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the $20 Gold Coin in 1907.

The reverse, by sculptor Miley Busiek, displays a male eagle returning to its nest and family with an olive branch clutched in its talons. This design first began as a sketch seen by the Republican National Committee, where it was so well received that Busiek was asked to recreate it as a small souvenir sculpture for President Reagan’s first inauguration—and Reagan liked it so much that he gave copies of the sculpture as gifts to inaugural guests as well as the former U.S. hostages that had just returned home from Iran. Upon learning that a U.S. gold bullion coin was being considered, Busiek began a one-woman campaign to have her design considered and selected. Her persistence paid off, and for the last 35 years her design has been the reverse of the Gold Eagle.

The New Era
For the Gold Eagle’s 35th anniversary, the U.S. Mint wanted to do something big. Something they had never done before in the history of the series.

For the coin’s 35th anniversary, for the first time since the coins inception, the reverse of the US Gold Eagle has changed. The new design, showing a close-cropped profile of a bald eagle with a strong, curved beak, thick plumage, and an intense gaze, was created by artist Jennie Norris. The new design was released mid-year 2021, and 2024 marks the third full-year release of 2024 Gold Eagles—the coins I’m making available to you here today.

Flawless Collector Grade
The coins I’m offering today are more than just the first of their kind. Knowing this, I worked hard to secure as many as I could as quickly as I could, and then sent them off to Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) for grading and certification.

I’m thrilled to announce that a number of the coins I submitted returned with that most coveted of grades—flawless Mint State-70 (MS70) condition. What’s more, each coin comes sealed by NGC in a protective display holder to protect the coin.

Collectors Covet the Best Quality
Collectors want the “best of the best.” I don’t care what the collectible is, collectors always chase the finest quality available. Coins are graded on a 70-point scale, with a grade of 70 representing absolute perfection, even under magnification. There is nothing higher. With a new release, collectors quickly snatch up coins and send them to leading independent grading services like Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), hoping those coins come back with a top grade of Mint State-70 (MS70). There’s simply no grade that’s more coveted by collectors.
