The first English rail lines were built to the same gauge as the country's wagon tramways. The tramways used the same jigs and tools used for building wagons, which used that same wheel spacing to fit within the spacing of the wheel ruts left behind by Imperial Roman chariots, which was based on the width of a horse's behind.
