These Coins Escaped the Gold Recall of 1933
Millions of gold coins were melted during the Gold Recall of 1933. In order to help an economy that was still foundering following the Great Depression, President Franklin Roosevelt signed an executive order known as the Gold Recall of 1933 requiring all Americans to trade in their gold, gold bullion and gold certificates. As a result, millions of gold coins were melted, so nobody knows how many of these $5 Gold Liberty coins still exist today.
President Roosevelt commissioned the construction of Fort Knox in 1935 as a depository for gold. The United States Bullion Depository opened at the Fort Knox U.S. Army Garrison in Kentucky in 1937. This is where the gold coins that were converted to bars ended up.
