The First Two U.S. Mint Denominations

In 1792 the first U.S. Mint branch was established in Philadelphia. The following year, the mint issued its first circulating coins: 11,178 copper cents! The mint produced both Half Cents and hefty, 29-millimeter Large Cents, and both were incredibly popular with the public. So popular, in fact, that by 1857 it became clear that the U.S. Mint wouldn’t have enough copper to meet demand for both coins. And so, the Half Cent was completely discontinued while the Large Cent was reduced in size to its current diameter of 19 millimeters.

Historic Two-Piece Set

This two-coin set brings you back to the glory days of the first two denominations struck by the U.S. Mint. You’ll receive a Classic Hair Half Cent struck between 1808 and 1836, and a Large Cent struck between 1816 and 1857. Dates vary, but each coin comes in Very Good to Very Fine (VG–VF) condition, meaning they spent time circulating in commerce. What could they have been used to purchase? Let your imagination run wild! Each coin will arrive in a clear numismatic capsule, with the set housed in a deluxe presentation case.

Bonus Jefferson Medal

As an added bonus, you’ll also receive an official U.S. Mint medal depicting President Thomas Jefferson, who was instrumental in the nation developing decimal currency. It’s a bronze replica of the Thomas Jefferson peace medal that depicts a bust of Jefferson along with inscriptions that read “TH. JEFFERSON,” “PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES” and “A.D. 1801.” The medal’s reverse features a pair of hands—one white, the other Native American — shaking hands in symbolic sign of friendship between the American government and the Indian nations. Above the hands are a crossed pipe and tomahawk, with the inscription “PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP” intertwined through the design. The U.S. Mint’s presidential medals date back to the earliest days of the republic and were often given to American Indian chiefs and other important leaders as gifts at important events and treaty signings.
