Hungarian Bank Notes Engraved & Printed In The U.S.

In March of 1848, the Hungarian people, inspired in part by the American Revolution, revolted against the rulers of the Austrian Empire in a bid to gain their independence. Six months later, the Imperial Austrian Government crushed the rebellion in a bloodbath that lasted into 1849. President Abraham Lincoln drew up a resolution of praise and support as many Hungarians took refuge in the U.S. One of those was the former refugees was finance minister Louis Kossuth, who decided to raise money to aid the cause by issuing Hungarian Fund bank notes engraved and printed in the United States.
