Carson City Mint Celebrates 155th Anniversary With Special Commemorative Striking
Founded in 1870, the Carson City Mint was built to transform the silver from Nevada’s booming Comstock Lode into U.S. currency. Nestled in the heart of a raucous frontier town, it stood as a symbol of order amid the chaos of merchants, miners, and gunslingers. For over two decades, the Mint produced coins marked with the distinctive “CC,” mintmark, each carrying a bit of the Wild West’s grit and glory before closing its doors in 1893. To celebrate its 155th Anniversary, the Nevada State Museum has agreed to an exclusive partnership with GOVMINT to strike special silver and gold commemoratives featuring the designs of the very first coins struck at Carson City.
Dual-Dated Commemoratives Struck In Gold & Silver
These 1870–2025 dual-dated commemoratives were struck at the historic Carson City Mint in a half ounce and one ounce of 99.99% pure gold, and one ounce of 99.9% silver. The half-ounce piece was struck on Coin Press No. 1, the first press used at the Carson City Mint in 1870. This historic press is currently on display at the Carson City Mint in the Nevada State Museum.
Special Privy Mark Augments 1870 Designs
Struck with the same iconic designs seen on Carson City’s earliest coins—the Seated Liberty Dollar, the $10 Gold Liberty, and the $20 Gold Liberty—these pieces allow collectors to hold the frontier in their hands. Here you can secure a two-piece gold and silver set that consists of the one-ounce silver piece and the one-ounce gold piece. The silver piece features Christian Gobrecht’s design of the 1870 Seated Liberty Silver Dollar, the first coin struck at the Carson City Mint. The one-ounce gold piece displays James Barton Longacre’s design for the 1870 Gold Double Eagle. Augmenting the designs is a special Carson City 155th Anniversary privy mark that shows an outline of the mint building with “CC” and “155” within the outline.
Flawless Signed Commemoratives With First Strike Ceremony Designation
These commemoratives will also come graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in flawless Uncirculated Minty State-70 (MS70) condition, a distinction that means your perfectly-graded commemoratives will have ZERO imperfections—showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended. In addition, NGC has designated that these pieces are First Strike Ceremony releases, meaning they were struck on October 6, 2025, in a ceremony personally attended by GOVMINT ambassador David J. Ryder, who was the 34th and 39th Director of the United States Mint, and Mark Amodei, U.S. Congressman from Nevada’s 2nd District. What’s more, each piece has been sonically sealed in a museum-quality acrylic holder and encapsulated with a First Strike Ceremony label that was personally signed by David Ryder.
Extremely Small Limited Editions
Just 3,000 one-ounce silver and a mere 200 one-ounce gold commemoratives were struck for worldwide release, and they are available exclusively though GOVMINT and its marketing partners.
