Feather Your Collection With Two First-Year Morgan Dollars
The Morgan Silver Dollar may be the most widely collected vintage silver dollar in United States Mint history. In this must-have set, you'll receive two first-year issue Morgans–one struck by the "Mother Mint" in Philadelphia and the other by the San Francisco Mint, known for the quality of its strikes. Plus, the coins in this set are both the seven tail-feathers reverse design, a result of an early controversy over the eagle's depiction.
The Famous 7 Tail Feathers Variety
The saga of the tail feather varieties of the first year, 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar illustrates how small details can be overlooked. ÂThe reverse eagle design dies for the first Morgan dollars were engraved with 8 tail feathers. After roughly 750,000 coins were struck, public outcry that eagles have only 7 tail feathers pushed the Mint to change the design. In order to keep the presses rolling, the next Morgans minted featured a 7 Tail Feathers design struck over the 8 Tail Feathers design. ÂThen, when the preparation of new dies was completed, the 7 Tail Feathers variety was struck resulting in not one, not two, but THREE unique collector variations! Now with an anatomically correct eagle, the design would be used throughout the rest of the series' 28-year run. Here you have a pair of the final 7 Tail Feathers variety. Not only that, but each coin comes in beautiful Extremely Fine (XF) condition!
Massive Meltings Have Decimated These Coins

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:
- AMERICA'S MOST POPULAR COIN – The Morgan Silver Dollar–so named for its designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan–has stood the test of time. Struck from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, it was the coin of America's "Wild West" and jingled in the coin purses of gamblers, gunfighters, soldiers, and dance hall girls.
- CLASSIC DESIGNS – Morgan's historic design depicts a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse while the reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings. The model used for Liberty was Miss Anna Williams of Philadelphia, who Morgan declared to have the most perfect feminine profile he had ever seen.
- THIRD TAILFEATHERS VARIETY – These coins feature the famous 7 Tail Feathers reverse design–the last of three reverse tail feather varieties struck during the coin's first year!
- STRUCK IN GLEAMING AMERICAN SILVER – Morgan Silver Dollars were struck in highly pure 90% fine silver from the famous Comstock Lode and measure 38.1 mm in diameter.
- LEGAL TENDER SILVER DOLLAR – Morgans were $1 legal tender and struck during the heyday of America's Wild West era where coins were overwhelmingly preferred over paper currency.
- EXTREMELY FINE CONDITION – Each coin in your 1878-PS Morgan Silver Dollar Two-Piece Set will come in beautiful Extremely Fine (XF) condition.
- THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING MORGANS – While millions of Morgan Silver Dollars were struck from 1878 through 1921, massive silver meltings and the ravages of time have taken their toll. Today coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence!
