Fugitives From The 1933 Gold Recall–Midwest Gold Cache!

On April 5, 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered all gold coins and gold certificates to be turned over to the Federal Reserve as part of his New Deal policies aimed at addressing the economic challenges of the Great Depression. By May 10, 1933, the government had taken in $300 million gold coins and $470 million worth of gold certificates. This quickly decimated the availability of U.S. Gold–making it quite amazing that both the 1907-P Gold Liberty Coins and $10 Gold Certificates available here escaped the recall and were not destroyed and lost to collectors forever. It is due to the significance of these pieces that this two-piece collection has been pedigreed by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being part of the "Midwest Gold Cache" that was discovered in a hoard found in Chicago.

High-Grade Artifacts Of Past American Coins & Currency

Interestingly, one piece of this two-piece set was backed by the other, meaning in 1907, Americans could exchange a $10 Gold Certificate like this one–the FIRST large "Horse Blanket" sized $10 Gold Certificate, graded by paper Money Guaranty (PMG) as being in Extremely Fine-45 (XF45), condition–for a $10 Liberty Coin like this one–struck in highly pure 90% fine gold from the first year of release, graded by NGC as being in Choice Uncirculated Mint State-63 (MS63) condition!

  • The 1907 Gold Liberty: Born From A Clash Of The Titans – It was a battle reminiscent of the ancient Greek gods. In one corner, President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt. In the other corner, Charles Barber, the 6th Chief Engraver at the United States Mint. Roosevelt wanted a new $10 gold piece that reflected the beauty and majesty of ancient gold coins. Barber wanted a workmanlike design that would be easy to strike. The men faced off, but just before Roosevelt left office, he ordered the mint to use his preferred design, a new one crafted by famed American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens–and collectors have loved the coin ever since! It shows Miss Liberty in a Native American headdress on the obverse and a defiant American Eagle on the reverse. The $10 Gold Eagle coins were struck from 1907 to 1933.
  • America's Only Large-Size $10 Gold Certificates – Living up to its Horse Blanket reputation, the $10 Gold Certificate measures approximately 7...Å“" x 3...›"–which is about 40% larger than today's notes! These scarce notes are America's only large-size $10 Gold Certificates and were produced from 1907 to 1927 when they were replaced by small-size notes. And while person depicted on the note looks like a distorted portrait of Alexander Hamilton, it's really a portrait of Michael Hillegas, the first U.S. Treasurer. Not only was Hillegas America's first Treasurer, serving in that position for 14 years, those years were all served BEFORE the United States ratified the Constitution! Prior to the American Revolution, Hillegas was a successful merchant who amassed a small fortune through his investments in a sugar refinery and an iron mine. Showing the diversity of his investments, he also operated what is believed to be North America's first music store.
