A Cuban Twist to An American Silver Dollar

After the last shots were fired in the Spanish-American War of 1898, Cuba became a protectorate of the United States. For many years afterwards, the U.S. continued to maintain firm control over the island nation even after the “Pearl of the Antilles” gained its formal independence in 1902. Among other things laid out in Cuba’s constitution, the U.S. retained the right to supervise the nation’s finances. That’s why in 1915 & 1916 and again from 1932-1934 the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia struck Cuban Silver Pesos – silver dollar-sized coins struck on the same planchets used for the U.S. Peace Silver Dollar!

The American roots for these Cuban coins ran very deep as evidenced by the fact that the designs were created by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles Barber. While the coin’s obverse features Cuba’s National Coat of Arms with a wreath, it’s the reverse design featuring a five-pointed star set against a background of bursting rays that gave the coin its distinctive nickname: The Star Peso.

Struck in highly pure 90% fine American silver, most of these Silver Star Pesos were held in government vaults to back paper currency and were later melted down so it is not known exactly how many have survived. While the original mintage numbers have little bearing on the number of survivors, it is known that the Philadelphia Mint struck over than three-and-a-half times more Star Pesos from 1932-1934 than it did 1934 Peace Silver Dollars!

Now you can get BOTH coins – a Cuban Star Peso struck from 1932-1934 and a 1934-P Peace Silver Dollar – in a spectacular two-piece set. Each set comes in Very Fine to Extremely Fine (VF-XF) condition with lots of nice detail. The set will come housed in a beautiful presentation box and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. Dates will vary.
