Series 692—Two of the Last Military Payment Certificates
American soldiers serving in Vietnam and overseas in the early 1970s needed money—cold hard cash for things like soda, cigarettes, beer, and other essentials. The base PX had all that—and more. But using U.S. currency at military establishments was out of the question thanks to the threat of black market trading and counterfeiting being far too great. Instead, they were issued Military Payment Certificates (MPC). Unlike standard U.S. currency, these notes were issued only to soldiers serving overseas, and were created to be tightly controlled and demonetized at a moment's notice. Here you can secure a set that features a two of the most of popular MPC notes ever issued: the $20 Chief Ouray Note and the $10 Chief Hollow Horn Bear Note!
Two Of The Most Prized Notes In The Entire MPC Series
Arguably one of the most prized notes in the entire MPC series, the $20 Chief Ouray Military Payment Certificate issued from 1970 to 1973 screams Americana! This note is from Series 692, the last official series of military payment certificates, and is often described as the most American of any of the MPC notes issued between 1946 and 1973. Ouray, whose name means "Arrow," was a Native American chief of the Ute Indians in Western Colorado. A man of peace, Ouray was able to negotiate peaceful settlements with the Federal government that helped prevent the kind of massacres and depredations perpetrated on other tribes. The reverse of the note features an image of the Hoover Dam.
Also from Series 692, Brulé Lakota Sioux Chief Hollow Horn Bear is depicted on the $10 note in full headdress while an American Bald Eagle with wings spread and talons in action appears on the reverse. Hollow Horn Bear was one of the nation's most famous and influential Sioux leaders. He fought at the Battle of the Little Bighorn and later served as the police chief at the Rosebud Indian Reservation. A skilled orator and negotiator, he made many trips to Washington, D.C. to advocate on behalf of the Lakota people shaking hands with such influential people as Presidents Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson.
