1970-D/1970-S Silver Kennedy Half Dollar BU & Proof 2-pc Set
No Kennedy Half Dollars for 1970?
Well, almost. The U.S. Mint decided not to strike the coin for circulation, but still minted a number for its popular U.S. Mint and Proof Sets. In all, 2.633 million Proofs and 2.038 million Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) Kennedy Half Dollars were struck, and here we’ve assembled one of each for you on the 50th anniversary of their release. Each coin features the famous effigy of President John F. Kennedy, first minted just a few months after his untimely death in the fall of 1963. Each coin will arrive protected by a round numismatic capsule & housed in a display case and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
The 1970 Kennedy Half Dollar caught collectors by surprise mostly due to the U.S. Mint’s low-key approach to the coin. Not only was this coin available only in the U.S. Mint & Proof Sets, but it was the last Kennedy Half Dollar that contained any silver. From 1965 to 1970, the coin was struck with 40% silver and in 1971 it shifted to the copper-nickel clad version. Because the Mint did not publicize the fact that these coins were available only in the Mint and Proof sets, many people were not initially aware that the coin had been struck in 1970. What’s more, by the time collectors found out, it was too late to secure one of the sets from the Mint. And, after everything was all said and done, the total for the Mint Set remained the lowest business strike of Kennedy Half Dollars until 2006!
When the Mint closed its sales windows on these sets, it made them instantly collectible and they were available only in the secondary markets. Combined with the them being the last silver Kennedy Half Dollars and their low mintage and you have a recipe for coin collecting goodness! Don’t miss out, we’re serving up these coins now while our supply lasts. Get a set for yourself now before other collectors devour them all!
