“Ike” Coins: The General and the President Two-Piece Set
Dwight David Eisenhower is one of the most celebrated Americans of the 20th century. As a five-star general in the United States Army, he served as the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe during World War II, organizing the famous D-Day invasion. After the war, Eisenhower was elected as the 34th President of the United States, serving from 1953 to 1961 in an era defined by the slogan “I Like Ike.”
This set brings together two different United States Silver Dollars — a first-year 1971 Eisenhower Silver Dollar and the one-year-only 1990 Eisenhower Commemorative. Each coin here comes in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition and features designs that capture the man, the soldier and his era:
- Following the passing of Eisenhower in 1969, the U.S. Mint quickly issued the 1971 EISENHOWER DOLLAR. The first large-size dollar coin since the Peace Dollar series came to an end in 1935, “Ike” Dollars were also the last large-size dollar coins ever issued for circulation. The coin also paid tribute to the achievements of America’s space program by featuring an adaptation of the Apollo 11 insignia on the reverse. Coins released for circulation were struck in copper-nickel while 40% silver coins were minted for collectors.
- The 1990 EISENHOWER CENTENNIAL SILVER DOLLAR featured a unique dual design of Eisenhower—showing a portrait of President Eisenhower facing right superimposed over a profile of General Eisenhower facing left. The reverse design features Eisenhower’s home at Gettysburg. Struck in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% silver, the coin was released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Eisenhower’s birth.
Your 1971 & 1990 $1 Silver Eisenhower Two-Piece Set will also come with a 1944 French Allied Military Note, issued the same year Ike directed Allied troops into battle on D-Day. Like George Washington and Ulysses Grant before him, Eisenhower was a general who led the nation to victory in times of war and guided the country through times of peace in the years that followed. Pay tribute to this great American and secure your set today!
