2004-P Lewis & Clark Silver Dollar & 2000-2008 Sacagawea Dollar 2-pc Set NGC PF69 Smithsonian Coin Classics
Honoring the Lewis & Clark Expedition
In 1804, shortly after the completion of the Louisiana Purchase between France and the United States, Merriweather Lewis and William Clark set out on the first American expedition to cross the nation’s expansive newly acquired western territory. Over the course of two-and-a half years, they traveled from Pittsburgh to the Pacific Ocean – but they didn’t go alone. Along the way they met a Lemhi Shoshone woman named Sacagawea who would travel thousands of miles with the pair and help them establish cultural contacts with the Native American people they met along the way.
This set honors that partnership by bringing together a pair of coins that each pay tribute to the historic expedition. The first coin is the U.S. Mint’s 2004 Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commemorative Silver Dollar that was struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This one-year only coin was minted in highly pure 90% fine silver and depicts the pair of explorers against a background of trees and a river as they plan the next leg of their journey. The coin’s reverse features an inset designed to look like the Peace Medals Lewis & Clark presented to Native Americans as a token of good will.
The other coin is a Sacagawea Dollar that depicts Sacagawea as she would have appeared during the expedition, tirelessly moving ever forward while carrying her infant son Jean Baptiste on her back. The coin marked the first Native American woman to grace the obverse of a circulating U.S. dollar coin. The reverse shows an eagle in flight. Struck from 2000 to 2008, Sacagawea Dollars feature a golden color and plain edge to distinguish them from other coins of similar size. Date varies.
Both coins in this set come match-graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being in near-perfect Proof-69 (PF69) condition, a distinction that means your almost-flawless coins will showcase impressive full strikes and indistinguishable imperfections – well above and beyond the quality of the vast majority of coins in the series. Plus, each will come sonically sealed in its own acrylic holder along with an exclusive Smithsonian® Coin Classics label to further pay tribute to the Lewis & Clark Expedition, Sacagawea and their contributions to American history.
