1954–1958 France 100 Francs & 1986 Statue Of Liberty Half-Dollar 2-pc Set VF–BU
Symbols Of Freedom From France And The United States
The Statue of Liberty is one of America’s most enduring symbols of freedom—and the subject of some of our favorite commemorative releases, both from the United States Mint and from France! This two-piece set features a pair of beautiful Liberty-themed coins, one from each country! It consists of a 1954–1958 (date our choice) French 100 Francs in Very Fine (VF) condition and a 1986-D Half Dollar from the Denver Mint in gleaming Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition.
A gift from the French people commemorating the alliance of France and the United States during the American Revolution, the Statue of Liberty was the work of French sculptor and painter Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. The colossal statue’s official name is “Liberty Enlightening the World.” It was dismantled into 350 pieces and packed into 200 cases before being shipped to America where it was re-assembled on Liberty Island in New York Harbor and dedicated on October 28, 1886
About The Coins:
- In the center of the 1954–1958 FRENCH 100 FRANCS COIN is a close-up of Marianne, the French equivalent of Lady Liberty and the personification of France. She is shown wearing a Phrygian cap and holding a flaming torch. To the right of Marianne along the coin’s rim are the inscriptions, REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE (French Republic). The coin’s reverse shows the denomination and year of issue, and olive branches & cereal ears. Along the top of the coin are inscriptions that read LIBERTE • EGALITE • FRATERNITE • (liberty, equality, fraternity). More than 60 years old, this copper-nickel (CuNi) coin measures 26 mm in diameter.
- The obverse of the 1986 STATUE OF LIBERTY HALF DOLLAR was designed by Edgar Steever shows a ship of immigrants passing between the Statue of Liberty and the morning sun. The reverse designed by Sherl Joseph Winter, depicts an immigrant family standing on Ellis Island, the “Gateway to America” and a famous immigration station. They are looking across the water at the New York skyline along with an inscription that reads. “A NATION OF IMMIGRANTS.” This 30.6 mm CuNi commemorative coin was struck to pay tribute to the centennial of the Statue of Liberty.
We’ve managed to put together just 50 of these beautiful two-piece sets. These will not last long, so act quickly!
