Alternative Design for America’s Sacajawea Dollar
When the Sacajawea Dollar (spelled “Sacagawea” by the U.S. Mint) made its debut in 2000, it represented only the second time that a Native American has been featured on circulating U.S. coinage, and the first time that a Native American woman appeared on circulating U.S. coinage. Arriving on the scene nearly two decades after the unsuccessful — and short-lived — run of the Susan B. Anthony Dollar from 1979 through 1981, the Sacajawea Dollar’s stunning three-quarter profile design marked a new era in American coin designs.
Designed by Glenna Goodacre, the coin displayed an image of Sacajawea, a Lemhi Shoshone woman who helped guide the Lewis and Clark Expedition from 1804 to 1806. She is depicted looking over her shoulder while carrying her son Jean Baptiste on her back. However, this was only one of several designs created by Goodacre. And now, to pay tribute to the 20th anniversary of the Sacajawea Dollar, the Shoshone Bannock Tribe has released these dual-dated 2000-2020 silver and gold proofs that use one of Goodacre’s sketches created during the original design process.
Licensed by the Smithsonian® and struck by the Scottsdale Mint in a full ounce of 99.9% silver and 99.9% gold, these legal-tender $1 and $50 coins display one of the designs that Goodacre created and released as a sketch, but did not formally submit to the U.S. Mint for consideration: an image of Sacajawea with her arm raised, showing Lewis & Clark the way West. The reverse features the Shoshone Bannock Tribe seal. These proofs have also been struck in beautiful high relief on both sides, adding a level of depth not available on regular coins!
Not only was each coin in your 2020 Smithsonian One-Ounce Silver & Gold Sacajawea Two-Piece Proof Set expertly crafted by the mint from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields, but each has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation as being in flawless Proof-70 (PF70) condition. That distinction means that these perfectly-graded proofs have ZERO imperfections — showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended.
In addition, each proof available here has been sonically sealed in an acrylic holder with an exclusive label that was personally signed by Randy’L Teton, a Shoshone tribe member who was used by Goodacre as the model and inspiration for her Sacajawea designs. At the time, Teton was a 23 year old college student. Since then, she has participated in many national events honoring Sacajawea and continues her role as a motivational speaker addressing such issues as Sacajawea’s historical role, women of color, and Indigenous Leadership.
The limited edition for the One-Ounce Silver Sacajawea Proof has been set at a mere 2,020 and the One-Ounce Gold Sacajawea Proof was set at just 200 — numbers that are far too low for everyone who would like to own these stunning coins. Each set will also come with a fact-filled storybook and a Certificate of Authenticity. Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity; add these incredible commemorative coins to your collection today!
