323-280 B.C. Greek Gold Alexander Stater Tarsus NGC MS Star
Extremely Rare Alexander Stater – Finest of Less Than 10 Known
As you can see from the title, fewer than 10 of this beautiful Alexander Gold Stater exist, and this is the finest known! It’s got the American Numismatic Society collection, the British Museum and the Berlin Museum beat, graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) to be in incredible Mint State (MS) condition with a special Star designation, a Strike 5/5 and a Surface 4/5. This coin is so magnificent that we did a little research and discovered that in more than 2,200 rare coin auctions held over the past 18 years, this coin is the finest of the 3 sold during that time!
Struck in Asia Minor sometime between 323 and 238 B.C., this coin depicts the head of Athena with a large Corinthian helmet on the obverse, and Nike, winged goddess of victory on the reverse. These coins actually circulated after the death of Alexander, but so powerful a figure was Alexander that each coin has “OF ALEXANDER” inscribed on the reverse.
Alexander III of Macedonia (356-323 B.C.) was more commonly known as Alexander the Great. It takes a lot to have “The Great” as part of one’s name, but if anyone earned the moniker it was Alexander! While he is often remembered today for his military strategies, Alexander was also a great leader and humanitarian thanks to his teachings under the famous Greek philosopher Aristotle as a boy. Barely a man, Alexander became king of Macedonia at the age of 20 upon the death of his father Philip II. When Alexander was born, Macedonia was small kingdom in ancient Greece at a time when many small kingdoms and city states made up the Greek peninsula.
From the time he ascended to the throne until his death, Alexander led an unprecedented military campaign considered by experts as the world’s most successful military campaign – ever. His armies swept down through Egypt and then circled back through the East, taking territory the whole time all the way to the borders of India. Alexander’s armies defeated every army it faced for 13 years. His reign was short-lived, however, for he died at Babylon in 323 B.C. while traveling home. He was just 33.
