1906-D Denver Mint Collection VG
1906 First-Year Denver Mint Collection
The “D” mint mark was born in 1906 when United States coins began rolling off the presses at the newly opened Denver Mint. And among the first coins to see the light of day were Barber Coins like these – dimes, quarters and half dollars, all named after their designer Charles Barber, the U.S. Mint’s 6th Chief Engraver.
These coins were the backbone of daily commerce and small transactions throughout America. And thanks to the Denver Mint, folks west of the Mississippi were able to receive the coins they needed without having to wait for shipments from either the West or East Coasts. These coins were real, hard currency, struck in highly pure 90% fine American silver. When people received change in the form of these coins, they knew they had real money in their pockets and coin purses.
The common obverse features Lady Liberty wearing her Phrygian cap, while the common reverse features an eagle with its wings outstretched. Upon its breast is a shield bearing an American flag design. All three coins in this collection are first-year issues, being the first to ever bear the “D” mint mark! Collectors are always hunting high and low for “firsts,” and this set brings you three!
The Denver Mint’s origins can be traced back to the Civil War when Clark, Gruber & Company began striking die-trial pieces in Denver, Colorado. The company was later purchased by the U.S. Treasury Department and turned into a Federal assay office. Construction on the Denver Mint was completed in 1904, but since the Mint’s new machinery was first sent to the St. Louis Exposition of 1904 for display, the Denver Mint’s first coins weren’t struck until 1906.
Each coin in this collection has been graded to be in Very Good (VG) condition or better, and the set comes encapsulated with a custom insert card inside a special 3" x 5" holder. Mark the first year of the Denver Mint and secure your set today.
