1915 Lusitania Lincoln Cents

In 1915, the ocean liner RMS Lusitania backed out of Pier 54 on New York’s Lower West Side. Due in part to German advertisements taken out in American newspapers warning of the dangers of the war-torn oceans, some passengers were nervous – but the ship still left port with its cabin full as it headed out on its journey to Liverpool. But on May 7, a German U-Boat sighted the liner and fired off a single torpedo that sent the Lusitania to the bottom of the ocean within 18 minutes.

That fateful year, the low-mintage 1915 Lincoln Wheatback Cent sat in the pockets of the crowd that gathered to see the ship make its final departure. This set brings together the 1915-P, 1915-D and 1915-S Lincoln Cents struck at the Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco Mints in Very Good to Fine (VG-F) condition. Condition varies.

The sinking of the Lusitania turned public opinion in the United States against Germany. Among the 1,198 dead and missing were 128 Americans. Following the attack, Congress decided not to enter World War I only after the German high command agreed to designate that all passenger liners were off limits. But when Germany resumed unrestricted submarine warfare in 1917 and began targeting American merchant ships, the United States had seen enough and declared war, changing history forever.

The sinking of the Lusitania was a watershed moment in American and world history. Capture this historic and tragic event with this incredible three-piece set of 1915 Lincoln Cents. Each set comes presented in a custom display card and accompanied by an informative storycard card. Click one to your cart today.
