These Buffalo Nickels Are Clipped!

When coins are struck, a small percentage can have possible errors, one of those being "clipped." A clipped coin is one that has a flat or crescent-shaped bite taken out of it, which can result from coin stock overlapping as the planchets are being punched out. Generally, clipped and other errors are caught by the watchful eyes of the U.S. Mint techs, but occasionally some errors escape to become huge collector's items.

Error Coins That Circulated Under The Noses Of Collectors

Each of the three Buffalo Nickels in this set–one each from 1934, 1935, and 1936–features a clipped error as designated by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC). What's more, the 1934-D Nickel is graded in Very Good-08 (VG08) condition, the 1935 Nickel is graded in Very Fine-15 (VF15) condition, and the 1936-S Nickel is graded in Fine 15 (F15)–grades that means each of these coins circulated heavily, yet no one took them out of circulation and kept them as a keepsake, meaning they circulated for years under the very noses of collectors!

Rugged Wild West Designs

Created by famed American sculptor James Earle Fraser, the Buffalo Nickel has always been one of America's most revered coins and continues to be very popular thanks to its designs that capture the pioneer spirit of America. The Native American depicted on the coin is a dead ringer for Oglala Lakota Chief Iron Tail–though Fraser claimed it was a composite of three men in order to protect both Iron Tail's privacy and his own artistic license. It was the first time an Indian Head design accurately portrayed a male Native American. The buffalo on the reverse was modeled after Black Diamond, a large American bison then on display at the Bronx Zoo in New York City not far from Fraser's studio. This timeless design is as popular as ever and now graces the U.S Mint's annual $50 one-ounce gold bullion coin!
