Last Circulating 90% Silver Change
1964 was a pivotal year for the United States Mint. Not only did that year mark the release of the new John F. Kennedy Half Dollar, struck for the first time just months after the former president's assassination, but it also marked the final year that the Mint struck circulating coins in highly pure 90% fine silver. In addition to the new Kennedy Half Dollar, that meant that the Washington Quarter and Roosevelt Dime were struck for the final time for circulation in silver! Can you imagine an age when the change in your pocket was made of real, honest-to-goodness American silver?
1964 Silver Coins Still In Uncirculated Condition!
Now you can get all three of these last-ever coins in this spectacular three-piece set. Each coin also comes in gleaming Uncirculated (Unc) condition just crackling with original mint sheen:
- 1964 ROOSEVELT DIME – The Roosevelt Dime was released into circulation on January 30, 1946, to coincide with what would have been President Franklin Roosevelt's 64th birthday. Because Roosevelt suffered from polio and had helped found the March of Dimes to fight the disease, using his likeness on the dime was the obvious way to honor the popular president for leading the country through the Great Depression and World War II. Beautifully designed by John R. Sinnock, the design has remained unchanged ever since.
- 1964 WASHINGTON QUARTER – First struck in 1932 as a one-year-only commemorative for the 200th anniversary of President George Washington's birth, the coin was so popular that it replaced the Standing Liberty as the country's circulating quarter design. Designed by sculptor John Flanagan, it has featured the same bust of Washington ever since.
- 1964 KENNEDY HALF-DOLLAR – Featuring U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts' bust of President John F. Kennedy, the 1964 Kennedy Half-Dollar was originally meant to be a one-year-only tribute to the fallen President. It proved to be so popular, however, that the U.S. Mint has issued it every year since. The coin's reverse is a modified design of the Presidential Seal by Frank Gasparro, who replaced Roberts as the U.S. Mint's Chief Engraver in 1965.
