Half Eagle Design Finally Struck The Way Saint-Gaudens Intended
Augustus Saint-Gaudens never saw the finished version of his $20 gold Double Eagle coin before his death in 1907. Widely considered America's crowning numismatic achievement, it represents the pinnacle of the coin renaissance inspired by President Teddy Roosevelt. But many people don't know that Saint-Gaudens iconic Double Eagle design was almost used for the Half Eagle as well. After his death, the United States Mint was in the process of adapting the beautiful design to a smaller format to use on the $5 gold Half Eagle denomination, but controversy over the exclusion of "In God We Trust" on the $20 design brought work to a sudden halt. This paved the way Saint-Gaudens' gifted protégé Bela Lyon Pratt, to bring his now-famous incuse Indian head design to the table.
Had things gone slightly differently, it could have been Saint-Gaudens' Double Eagle design on the Half Eagle. And what if the method of striking incuse designs that his student proposed had been used on the design, allowing Saint-Gaudens' designs to be struck with all the depth he originally intended? Now we can see what might have been with a new set of officially authorized, pure silver and gold specimens struck with DUAL SUPER INCUSE designs!
Designed From Original Saint-Gaudens Plasters: The Classic American Coin That COULD Have Been!
The National Park Foundation (NPF) worked with the Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park to gain access to the original 1907 Saint-Gaudens plasters, and none other than the legendary John Mercanti, the former 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, was brought on board to recreate the iconic eagle design. As a testament to his pride in the project, Mercanti even added his signature to the exclusive Saint-Gaudens labels encapsulated with these impressive and historic commemoratives!
Saint-Gaudens's Iconic Gold Double Eagle Design Sinks To New Heights
This numismatic "woulda-shoulda-coulda" is drenched in detail from the undulating layers in Ms. Liberty's flowing robes to the word "LIBERTY" arcing above her to the stars representing the states circling around the medal's rim—it's remarkable. Making it even more jaw-dropping are the dual super incuse designs that are much deeper than those on regular incuse coins. Not only do the images sink deep below the surface of the medal rather than rise above it, but the designs create an almost three-dimensional effect that was simply not possible a century ago! But now, thanks to an exclusive agreement with the Augustus Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site in cooperation with the NPF, the original design has been struck on these officially-authorized, fine silver medals, just the way the legendary artist dreamed it would be—with incredible SUPER Incuse relief on both sides!
