Three Generations Of Herodian Evil

The three Judean kings featured on the ancient coins in this three-piece set are major figures of a dynasty of anti-Christian antagonists that stalked the pages of the Bible's New Testament and reigned in the Holy Land as puppet rulers by the pleasure of the Roman Empire. They are Herod I and his son and grandson Herod Archelaus and Herod Agrippa. At times they were good statesmen, but not always popular with their Jewish subjects due to their cozy relationship with Rome and the lengths with which they went to maintain their grip on power:

  • KING HEROD I, who ruled from 37 to 4 BC, owed his crown to Rome, and was considered to be a foreign interloper by the Jews. Often referred to as Herod the Great, he is famous for ordering the "Massacre of the Innocents" when he heard that the Messiah was prophesized to have been born in the city of Bethlehem. All children under the age of two were killed, but Jesus' parents saved their son's life by smuggling him to Egypt.
  • The son of Herod I, HEROD ARCHELAUS reigned from 4 BC to AD 6. His reputation as a cruel despot was cemented before Rome even officially recognized him as a Judean King when he canceled Passover in 4 BC after ordering the massacre of 3,000 people at the Temple in Jerusalem. In the Gospel of Matthew, Joseph was warned not to return to Israel following the news that Herod Archelaus had succeeded his father. Joseph instead took his family to Galilee, thus explaining why Jesus was born in Bethlehem but grew up in Nazareth and came to be known as Jesus of Nazareth.
  • The grandson of Herod the Great and the nephew of Herod Archelaus HEROD AGRIPPA proved to be the most tolerant of these three—although that's not saying much! During his short reign from AD 41-44 he became a close friend of evil Emperor Caligula. And, while he did convince his psychopathic friend not to erect his blasphemous statue in the Temple at Jerusalem, he was the first King to martyr an Apostle (James, son of Zebedee) and even had Peter imprisoned.
