Ancient Greek Coins Of The Gods
Many ancient coins feature the portraits of famous kings and rulers, but these Ancient Greek coins feature the portraits of well-known gods and goddesses from ancient mythology whose images and stories persist even to the present day. Each of these remarkable, genuine bronze coins from the regions of Sicily and Thessaly, from the Hellenistic period (the three centuries of Greek history between the death of the Macedonian king Alexander the Great in 323 B.C.E. and the rise of Augustus in Rome in 31 B.C.E.) features a different god from Greek Mythology:
- ATHENA -The goddess of wisdom and war, Athena is a puzzling contradiction as she is also associated with peace and handicrafts, especially spinning and weaving. She is the patron and protectress of the city of Athens. The Ancient Greeks debated whether she was named for the city or the other way around. Most modern scholars agree that the former is the case.
- APOLLO - The god of the sun and light, Apollo is the embodiment of the Hellenic ideal of kalokagathia, a perfect blend of physical superiority and moral virtue. The only major god who appears with the same name in both Greek and Roman mythology, Modern scholars believe his name comes from the Greek word apella which means "a sheepfold," suggesting that Apollo was originally a protector of the flocks and herds.
- POSEIDON - The god of the sea, Poseidon is a violent and ill-tempered hot-blooded deity who had many disputes with both gods and men. One of the Twelve Olympians, he was also feared as the provoker of earthquakes and worshipped as the creator of the horse. The origin of his name is lost to antiquity. Plato said his name means "knower of many things," and Homer said that his shriek was as loud as 10,000 men combined.
