Gorgeous, Vintage U.S. Gold Coins 4-Piece Set–BUT There's Only One!
2023 is the 175th anniversary of one of the most impactful events in U.S. history–the great California Gold Rush. With piles of gold being pulled out of the earth, the amount of gold available to strike into coinage skyrocketed. In fact, the Double Eagle denomination was a direct result of the great California Gold Rush.
Vintage Gold Coins That Survived The Melting Pots
What you have here is a four-piece set of vintage U.S. gold coins–each certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) in grades ranging from Uncirculated Mint State-62 to Choice Uncirculated Mint State-64 (MS62–MS64) condition. In 1933 when President Franklin Roosevelt issued the Gold Recall, millions of vintage U.S. gold coins were lost in the melting pots and turned into bars. These coins dodged those melting pots! The set includes:
- 1929-P $2.50 INDIAN. This coin is from the LAST year of issue for the $2.50 Indian series. Struck from 1908-1929, America's $2.50 Gold Indian coins featured a design that was recessed or incused into the coin. Only the $5 Indians struck during the same period featured this same incuse deign, making them two of the most intriguing U.S. coins ever issued. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, his initials "BLP" can be seen on the coin's obverse at the base of the Native American's bust. This coin will come in Select Uncirculated Mint State-63 (MS63) condition.
- 1908-P $5 INDIAN. This is FIRST year of issue for the $5 Indian series. One of the shortest-lived series in U.S. coin history, the 1908–1929 "Gold Indian" $5 coins are collector favorites thanks to Bela Lyon Pratt's incused design of an authentic-looking Native American on the obverse and the proud Bald Eagle on the coin's reverse. The $5 Gold Indians were struck from 1908 to 1916 and again for one last time in 1929. This coin will come in Select Uncirculated Mint State-63 (MS63) condition.
- 1926-P $10 INDIAN. The last ever $10 Gold Eagle coin struck by the U.S. Mint for circulation, this coin features sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens' design that shows Miss Liberty in a Native American headdress on the obverse and a defiant American Eagle on the reverse. These coins were struck from 1907 to 1916 and then irregularly until 1933. This coin was minted after the series has been on hiatus from 1921-1925. This coin will come in Uncirculated Mint State-62 (MS62) condition.
- 1927-P $20 SAINT-GAUDENS. President Theodore Roosevelt considered Saint-Gaudens' depiction of Lady Liberty on the $20 Gold Double Eagle to be the most beautiful image to ever appear on a U.S. coin. There are many collectors today that agree with that statement, even now more than 100 years later! This coin was struck with excellent eye appeal and will come in Choice Uncirculated Mint State-64 (MS64) condition.
