2002-W Platinum Eagle 4-pc Set NGC PF70UC w/Mercanti Signature
Low-Mintage Platinum Eagle Proof Sets Signed by John Mercanti
The Platinum Eagle Proof coin series from the United States Mint is something truly special. Unlike most U.S. issues like the Gold and Silver Eagles or the Gold Buffalo, which feature the same designs from year to year, the Platinum Eagle Proof series displays a new reverse design each year.
Here we have the 2002 Platinum Eagle Proof Set struck at the West Point Mint. The obverse of each coin features a close-up of Lady Liberty designed by John Mercanti, the U.S. Mint’s 12th Chief Engraver. The reverse of each coin as designed by Alfred Maletsky pays tribute to the “Vistas of Liberty” by highlighting an American landscape. It depicts a bald eagle swooping towards a trout leaping from a lake against a background showing the snow-capped mountains and trees of the American Northwest.
This marvelous set includes four Platinum Eagle Proofs, struck in one, one-half, one-quarter and one-tenth ounce of 99.95% pure platinum. Plus, each coin in the set comes match-graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being in flawless Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70UC) condition, a distinction that means your perfectly-graded proofs will have ZERO imperfections — showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended.
What’s more, each coin will come sonically sealed in an acrylic holder and encapsulated with special labels that were personally signed by John M. Mercanti, the U.S. Mint’s 12th Chief Engraver! A giant in the numismatic world, Mercanti has produced more coin and medal designs than any person in U.S. Mint history!
While Silver Eagles can be struck in the tens of millions each year, Platinum Eagles are struck in far fewer quantities. In 2002, only 40,253 Platinum Eagle Proofs were struck across all weights! So, it’s no small thing that we’ve been able to secure any complete four-coin sets of perfect-grade coins at all! Our supply of these perfect-grade sets is extremely limited, so reserve yours now while you still can!
