2019 Great Britain Gold & Silver Queen Victoria 200th Anniversary 4-pc Set NGC PF70UC First Struck
Gold & Silver Coins Celebrate Queen Victoria’s 200th Birthday
2019 marked the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birth. Becoming Queen at the age of 18, Victoria reigned from 1837 to 1901 – a total of 64 years – and was the longest-reigning monarch in British history until she was surpassed in by Great Britain’s current monarch, her great-great-granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II. Synonymous with the British Empire’s industrial and economic expansion of the 1800s, her name is used to describe the times – The Victorian Era, an age when it was said the sun never set on the British Empire.
To pay tribute to the bicentenary of Victoria’s birth, Great Britain’s world-renowned Royal Mint has issued a series of special commemoratives that paid tribute to the woman whose children populated the Royal Houses of Europe and thus provided her with the sobriquet “the Grandmother of Europe.” This spectacular four-piece set reflects the best of that series in gold and silver proof coins.
Each coin has also been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being in flawless Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70UC) condition, a distinction that means these perfectly-graded proofs will have ZERO imperfections – showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended. In addition, NGC has further certified that these proofs are First Strike (FS) coins, meaning that they were among the first struck by the mint and were verified within the first 30 days of issue. The coins will also come sonically sealed acrylic holders and encapsulated with exclusive London Tower Bridge labels.
The coins in this set are:
- THE £5 GOLD PROOF was struck in 1.285 ounces of 91.67% fine (22 karat) gold and is from a Limited edition of just 725 coins. It depicts a young Queen Victoria surrounded by the historic innovations that occurred during her lifetime, including the Penny Farthing bicycle, the telephone, the SS Great Eastern (then the largest ship ever built), and a train representing the first-ever British Royal train journey in 1842. Rounding out the design is a special edge lettering that reads “Workshop of the World.” NGC has certified this proof as “One of First 100 Struck.”
- THE £5 SILVER PROOF was struck in 28.28 grams of 92.5% Sterling silver and is from a Limited edition of just 7,500 coins. It features the same design used for the £5 Gold Proof of a young Queen Victoria surrounded by the historic innovations that occurred during her lifetime. NGC has certified this proof as “One of First 250 Struck.”
- THE £5 SILVER PIEDFORT PROOF was struck in 1.82 ounces of 92.5% Sterling silver and is from a Limited edition of just 2,750 coins. This double-thick coin features the same design used for the £5 Gold & Silver Proofs of a young Queen Victoria surrounded by the historic innovations that occurred during her lifetime. NGC has certified this proof as “One of First 250 Struck.”
- THE £10 SILVER PROOF was struck in five ounces of highly-pure 99.9% fine silver and is from a limited edition of just 800 coins. It depicts a young Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert with the year of her birth (1819) in Roman numbers MDCCCXIX. What really makes this design so unique is that it is the same design used on a medal specially commissioned for the Great Exhibition of 1851 – the dolphins and trident at the base of their necks symbolic of England’s status as the world’s foremost naval power. NGC has certified this proof as “One of First 200 Struck.”
Coin collectors, history buffs, royal watchers and precious metal buyers will all be vying for these coins. But with such small limited mintages, there are far too few to go around.
