Commemorate The Beauty And History Of Spanish Gold Escudos

In 1868, one of the most important monetary laws in Spain was enacted that introduced the Peseta as the nation's single monetary unit. In doing so, however, the act caused the removal of Gold Escudo coins from circulation. In 2018, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of this momentous event, the Spanish Royal Mint issued four legal tender gold coins in 2018 with different sizes and denominations to correspond to the one, two, four, and eight Escudos. Struck with a stunning Proof finish, this four-piece collection includes faithful reproductions of noteworthy Spanish Gold Escudo coins from the 1500s up to the 1700s. The only changes made to the original designs are the 2018 year of issue, the face value in Euros, and the mint mark of the Spanish Royal Mint:

  • The 1 Escudo coin is a reproduction of the gold 1 Escudo coin struck in 1759 during the final year of King Ferdinand VI's reign and shows Ferdinand's wigged bust. This commemorative reproduction was struck in 3.375 grams of 99.9% pure gold and bears a modern denomination of 50 Euros and measures 18 mm in diameter. It is limited to a worldwide release of just 2,500 coins.
  • The 2-Escudo coin is a reproduction of a 2 Escudo coin struck during the reign of King Felipe III in 1607. It was also known as a "doubloon" or "pistole." This commemorative reproduction was struck in 6.75 grams of 99.9% pure gold and bears a modern denomination of 100 Euros and measures 23 mm in diameter. It is limited to a worldwide release of just 2,000 coins.
  • The 4-Escudo coin is a reproduction of the Castilian gold 4-Escudo coin, struck during the reign of King Felipe II. The actual mint year is unknown, as coins did not carry the number of the year systematically until 1588. This commemorative reproduction was struck in 13.5 grams of 99.9% pure gold and bears a modern denomination of 200 Euros and measures 30 mm in diameter. It is limited to a worldwide release of just 1,500 coins.
  • The 8-Escudo coin is a reproduction of a gold 8-Escudo coin struck at the Madrid Mint in 1719, during the reign of King Felipe V. This coin was also known as a "quadruple pistole." This commemorative reproduction was struck in 27 grams of 99.9% pure gold and bears a modern denomination of 400 Euros and measures 38 mm in diameter. It is limited to a worldwide release of just 1,000 coins.
