Gorgeous 1886 $5 Silver Certificate Note

This beautiful United States $5 Silver Certificate Note from 1886 was known as the "Silver Dollar Note" because its reverse features five Morgan Silver Dollars surrounded by stylized scrollwork—literally illustrating that it was backed by silver! The front of the note features a prominent portrait of the 18th President of the United States, Ulysses. S. Grant, a hero of the Civil War, who passed away a year before this note was printed.

Among The Greatest American Currency Notes Ever Issued

This note is ranked #21 out of 100 in Q. David Bowers book, The 100 Greatest American Currency Notes. Each is graded in Fine 12 (F12) condition by Paper Money Guaranty (PMG), the world's largest third-party paper currency grader, which means it was actually used in commerce. This 1886 $5 Silver Certificate is classified as Fr #263 with a brown seal on the front along with the signatures of former Civil War General William S. Rosecrans, who served register of the U.S. Treasury from 1885 to 1893, and James Nelson Huston, who served as Treasurer of the United States from 1889 to 1891. This Fr designation refers to the numbering system in the widely used Paper Money of the United States reference book written by Arthur L. Friedberg and Ira S. Friedberg. The Fr numbers indicate varieties existing within a larger type design.
