Pocket Change From The Old West
During the 19th century, folks in the Wild West didn't trust paper currency much and didn't like carrying it in their pockets and saddlebags, preferring instead hard currency that jingled. The loose change they liked are all represented here in this fascinating Five-Piece "Saddlebag" Set of United States coins. The set includes:
· LARGE CENT - Minted more than 165 years ago, the Large Cent was one of the first coin types the U.S. Mint struck back in 1793, one year after it opened its doors. The Large Cent endured until copper became too expensive and people started hoarding Large Cents and melting them at a profit. The last Large Cent was struck in 1857.
· INDIAN HEAD CENT - Struck from 1859 to 1909, America's Indian Head Cent coin got its nickname thanks its design that depicts Lady Liberty wearing a Native American headdress along with a beaded necklace and a hair band emblazoned with a diamond.
· TWO CENT PIECE - After the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, coinage virtually disappeared. People feared the worst and held on tightly to their precious metals. So, for just nine years, from 1864 to 1872, the U.S. Mint struck a copper Two-Cent Piece, the first coin in U.S. history to display the motto "In God We Trust."
· THREE CENT NICKEL - The Three-Cent Nickel was a relatively short-lived, series, struck by the U.S. Mint from 1865-1889. First minted in silver, the coin was hoarded by the public forcing the Mint to strike the coin in copper/nickel. Today, many collectors aren't even aware that this coin was ever even struck.
· SEATED LIBERTY DIME - The Seated Liberty Dime depicts a goddess-like Lady Liberty seated upon a rock holding a Liberty pole topped by a Phrygian Cap of freedom. This coin, minted in 2.5 grams of 90% fine silver, were struck for 55 years from 1837 to 1891.
Along with this five-piece set of coins, each of which is at least 125 years old, you'll also receive a Rhode Island Obsolete Currency Note from the 1850s—which was often given in change, backed by the bank that issued the note—and accompanied by the hope that it wouldn't be redeemed at all!
Each set will be housed in a pouch and includes a Legends of the Wild West storybook. Secure yours!
