Honoring a True American Hero
U.S. Marine John Basilone is a hero unlike any other. This courageous fighting Leatherneck from World War II is still the only man in history to be awarded the Medal of Honor, the Navy Cross and the Purple Heart.
As a machine gunner in the First Battalion, 7th Marine Division, he stood his ground against 3,000 Japanese soldiers in 1942 at the Battle of Guadalcanal. This act of valor led to him being taken out of combat, awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and welcomed home as a war hero and feted with a parade in his hometown of Raritan, New Jersey. The military wanted him to keep him home selling war bonds, but Basilone knew his place was back among his men, and he begged to return to combat. He finally got his wish in 1945, and valiantly died during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
The town of Raritan still holds an annual parade in his honor on the first Sunday of November, but if you can’t make it we’ve got you covered with this five-piece set of circulating coinage from 1945 – the Lincoln Penny, Jefferson War Nickel, Mercury Dime, Washington Quarter and Walking Liberty Half Dollar. The Lincoln Cent was made from used cartridge cases and the Jefferson Nickel was made from silver and copper – the U.S. Mint’s contribution to the war effort as the metal taken out of these coins was badly needed for munitions manufacturing. Each set will come housed in a clear 3" x 5" holder and accompanied by a custom insert card. You’ll also receive a storycard about this American hero and a bonus 1942 1 Shilling Japanese Invasion paper currency note.
