6.5-Gram Niobium “Blurple” Moon Antiqued Medal
Forget Cheese, This Moon is Made of “Blurple” Niobium
Here’s something we’ve never seen before — a geographically correct design of the moon’s surface struck in Niobium! Well, technically, it’s a selenographically correct design, but by whatever term you call it, it’s a 136,794,240:1 scale design of the surface texture of the Moon’s near AND far sides minted in Niobium, a space-age metal that’s on the cutting age of rocket technology.
OK, first things first. What is Niobium you ask. Niobium is a shiny white metal used in a wide variety of things from hypoallergenic jewelry to super-conducting magnets. Most recently it was used by SpaceX in the development of the engines of its Falcon 9 rocket. Normally the metal forms a film when exposed to air, turning shades of blue, green or yellow, but this antiqued medal has been given tones of purple and blue (or “Blurple”) for this special release.
Measuring 25.4 mm in diameter, this medal is about the same size as a United States quarter. Plus, it features an amazing antique finish that will leave you moonstruck by its beauty. A release like fits the old saying about something coming around once every blue moon. It’s perfect for any lunar-themed collection and makes a great gift, too!
