2016 Native American Iroquois Tribe 6-pc BU Set
Celebrating the Iroquois Sovereign Nation
Long before America was a nation of states, it was a nation of tribes. The coins are also recognized by the Federal Government as legal tender in each tribal nation as set forth in the Constitution of the United States and from the terms of bilateral treaties that date back to the 18th century.
With a goal of producing accurate cultural depictions of Native American tribes from across North America, the Native American Mint has added this Iroquois Tribe Six-Piece Set to its range of Tribal coins in 2016. The set contains a one-cent, five-cent, 10-cent, 25-cent, 50-cent and $1 coin, with designs featuring a Cornhusk Society mask, and Iroquois fishing in a canoe, a lacrosse game, a display of corns, beans and squash, a traditional stone pipe and an Iroquois Chief wearing a headdress. The coins share an identical obverse displaying Native American artwork.
Known for their wood-and-bark longhouses, the Iroquois tribes have inhabited the areas of Ontario and upstate New York for more than 4,000 years. Prior to the arrival of European colonists, the Iroquois consisted of several tribes that had banded together to form a political system consisting of two houses. Representatives from the Seneca and Mohawk tribes met in one house and representatives from the Oneida and Cayuga tribes met in the other. Because of the sophisticated structure of their society, the Iroquois proved to be a tough foe facing settlers attempting to carve out a new life in early America. One of the tribe’s greatest admirers was none other than Benjamin Franklin, and some historians even believe that some aspects of the Constitution are based on Iroquois ideas!
