Paying Tribute To Cherokee Culture And History

Long before America was a nation of states, it was a nation of tribes. To honor these tribes, the Torrance, California-based Native American Mint struck a series of Indian Sovereign Nations coins that are authorized by each tribe. The coins are also recognized by the Federal Government as legal tender in each tribal nation as set forth in the Constitution of the United States and from the terms of bilateral treaties that date back to the 18th century. The Native American Mint’s coin sets honoring different tribes continues here with the 2025 Cherokee Tribe Set.

One-Year-Only Designs Honor Cherokee Culture

The set contains a one-cent, five-cent, 10-cent, 25-cent, 50-cent, and $1 coin, each featuring a common obverse. The one-year-only reverse designs depict items, animals, and people central to the Cherokee way of life. Of particular note is the 10-cents coin that depicts Sequoyah, one of the most famous Cherokee Indians and inventor of the Cherokee Alphabet. The 25-cents coins shows the famous 1765 engraving of “The Three Cherokees” who traveled to London in 1762 as guests of the British government after the conclusion of the Anglo-Cherokee War. The $1 coin features Conocotocko “Standing Turkey” who aligned the Cherokee with the British against the colonies of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia during the American Revolution.

The Largest Native American Tribe In The United States

The Cherokee nation is the largest Native American tribe in the United States. They lived in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee when settlers arrived from Europe. The name Cherokee means “speakers of another language” and the Cherokee called themselves the Ani-Yunwiya, meaning “principal people.” They fought with the French during the French and Indian war and sided with the British during the American Revolution. The Cherokee lost much of their land following these conflicts. They were ultimately forced from what little land they had left in 1838 and relocated to the state of Oklahoma on a march that has since been referred to as “The Trail of Tears” during which 4,000 Cherokee people died during the tortuous journey.
