Great Rulers of History 6-pc Set
Hold The Fate Of History’s Greatest Rulers In Your Hands
Today when we talk about GOATs—Greatest Of All Time—we’re usually referring to super athletes like Tom Brady and Michael Jordan. But while TB12 and His Airness have enthralled millions for many years, their accomplishments pale against some of the world’s greatest rulers, particularly this assembly of legendary leaders. The six-coin collection celebrates the lives and accomplishments of some of the greatest kings, emperors, and generals whose impact on the world is still felt today centuries after their passing.
An Eclectic Collection Of History’s Greatest Rulers
Long before there were sports cards, soda commercials and shoe endorsements there were these guys. An eclectic make-up of men who ruled over land that stretched from the steep mountains and flowing rivers of ancient Macedonia to the cold Russian landscape of the 18th century where the Tsars were forever seeking a warm-weather port. An instead of sports cards and bobbleheads to display their likenesses to the masses, we have their coins:
- 336–324 BC SILVER DRACHM OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT – Featuring a portrait of Zeus, this coin was struck during the reign of Alexander the Great, who is universally hailed as one of the world’s greatest military generals. In just 13 years he created a vast empire that stretched from Macedonia to Egypt and from Greece to India allowing the Greek Hellenistic culture to spread across much of the known world.
- 120–63 BC BRONZE COIN OF MITHRADITES THE GREAT – One of the Roman Republic’s most formidable opponents, Mithradites the Great was a polyglot who spoke 22 languages — one for each land he conquered. As the King of Pontus, an ancient district in northeastern Anatoli adjoining the Black Sea, he went toe-to-toe with Rome for dominance in Asia Minor. This coin features the head of a Gorgon.
- 306–337 BRONZE ROMAN COIN OF CONSTANTINE THE GREAT – The first Christian Emperor of the Roman Empire, Constantine founded the city of Constantinople and is arguably one of, if not THE greatest emperor ever to wear Rome’s Imperial laurel wreath. He was not lonely the empire’s first Christian emperor, but he made Christianity the main religion of Rome. His strong face on this coin shows the archetypical portrait of a Roman emperor.
- 379–295 BRONZE ROMAN COIN OF THEODOSIUS THE GREAT – Roman emperor Theodosius earned his sobriquet “The Great” due his victory over the Goths and the unification of the empire during a time when it was spiraling headlong towards its inevitable collapse in 476. He was also a staunch champion of The Church and was instrumental in establishing the Nicaean Creed as the main tenet for Christianity. His portrait is featured on this coin.
- 985–1014 BRONZA MASSA OF RAJARAJA THE GREAT – Born as Arulmoli Varm, he adopted the name of Rajaraja, which literally means “King of Kings.” But Rajaraja backed up this boast by becoming the greatest king of the Chola Empire that stretched from southern India into Sri Lanka and the islands of the Indian Ocean. He also built the famous Brihadisvara Temple in Thanjavu and encouraged poetry and the arts. A seated king is shown on this coin.
- 1682–1725 RUSSIAN SILVER KOPEK OF PETER THE GREAT – Make no mistake about it, Russian Tsar Pewter the Great was a ruthless man, who had his eldest son and heir tortured to death for daring to defy him. He did drag Russia into the modern world and made it a player on the world stage—a spot which Russia still occupies to this day. This coin features a design of St. George and the Dragon
