These Bank Notes cover around 100 years of Ukrainian history, with the earliest in this seven-piece set printed in 1918 under the authority of pre-soviet Ukraine. In 1922, Ukraine became part of the Soviet Union—and Ukraine would not mint its own currency until after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Two of the bank notes in this collection come from that pivotal year. Two more come from the 1990s, and the final Note is a current Ukrainian issue note!

A Strong Country With A Rich History

Ukraine is a strong country with a rich history—and is right now under threat by a major world power with an authoritarian government, openly rigged elections, state-sponsored assassinations, and the capacity for war crimes. A threat to Ukraine's sovereignty is also a threat to its independent currency. In fact, much of the current conflict is a direct result of Soviet Occupation nearly 100 years ago. One of the first things Soviet Dictator Josef Stalin did after the Soviet Union subsumed Ukraine was to create a man-made famine there from 1932 to 1933. Known as The Holodomor—the Great Famine—millions of Ukrainians died in the purge that enabled Stalin to effectively eliminate a Ukrainian independence movement and resettle depopulated areas with Russian settlers. This is the main reason why there are Russian-speaking areas in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region today. So harsh was the genocidal scheme that when Hitler's Nazi blitzkrieg stormed through Ukraine in 1941 that they were initially welcomed as liberators.
