Second Release In The "Wings Of Freedom" Series
Some of America's most beautiful currency notes have been out of circulation for years. Those beautiful pieces of paper currency form the basis of a new series of silver-plated medals called the "Wings of Freedom." The second release in the series is this impressive silver giant-sized medal that's based on the iconic 1862 $10 Legal Tender Note, one of the earliest depictions of President Lincoln on a currency note. It's also from the 1862 series Legal Tender notes, the first time the Federal government issued currency notes. In fact, the $1 note form this series came to be known as the greenback giving us a nickname still used today!
Abraham Lincoln And the First Greenback Currency
The medal features the High Relief image of President Abraham Lincoln on the obverse. Each piece is struck in base metal layered with silver with an antique finish and shows our nation's 16th president taken from the portrait on front of the note that was designed by German-American etcher, portrait painter, and steel-and-banknote engraver Frederick Girsch. The medal's reverse depicts a bold eagle with wings spread holding a U.S. shield—the same image that appeared alongside Lincoln on the front of the original note. The detail is exquisite! It's engraved in such a way as to replicate the lines that are embedded on an actual paper currency note!
Along with Christian Gobrecht, Girsch is hailed as one of the most important German-born steel engravers and engravers in American history, and 35 vignettes he created for U.S. banknotes are stored in the United States National Museum. The original banknotes were developed to help finance the Union's military operations during the Civil War. One of Lincoln's many accomplishments in office was pushing forward legislation to allow the federal government to print paper currency such as this. The Greenback set of U.S. paper currency featured a wide assortment of different designs and denominations and is today a favorite with collectors due to its intricate engraving and place in history.
