Ancient Roman Silver Quinarius from the 1st Century B.C.

Among the wide variety of coins that circulated throughout the Roman Empire across eight centuries from the time of the Republic to the time of the Emperors, the Quinarius stands out as one of the most obscure. In fact, the Quinarius is so scarce that many experienced collectors have never even seen one, and a book-length study on the ancient coin didn't appear in English until 2007! Not only are these scarce ancient coins making an appearance here, but they date from a period in history when Rome invaded Gaul in order to expand its territory.

Caesar's Victory In The Gallic Wars

These coins come from the first century B.C. and were contemporary with Julius Caesar, the iconic Roman general, statesman and dictator. Caesar worked to conquer the nomadic Gauls and other northern tribes of present-day France, Belgium, and parts of the United Kingdom and Germany during the Gallic Wars waged from 58-50 B.C. Despite those tribes' best efforts to unite against Rome, their internal squabbling contributed mightily to their fall. The Gallic Wars culminated in Caesar's decisive victory over the Celts and other tribes at the Battle of Alesia in 52 B.C. The complete Roman victory paved the way for the Roman Republic's expansion over the whole of Gaul, which was made an official Roman province in 27 B.C.

The Personification Of Rome

These Celtic silver coins were struck more than 2,000 years ago between 100 and 1 B.C. and would have circulated during the Gallic Wars. The obverse of this impressive silver coin depicts the Goddess Roma—the personification of the city of Rome—in a Celtic style. The reverse shows a stylized horse. The Celts themselves were a group of Indo-European tribes that once occupied Western Europe between the British Isles and the Danube River region.

This is a genuine silver Celtic Quinarius struck during the first century B.C. Each will come in an acrylic holder and housed in a presentation box accompanied by a storycard/Certificate of Authenticity . Get yours now!
