2,100-Year-Old Parthian Silver Coin

Here's a 2,100-year-old silver coin from the ancient Kingdom of Parthia that features the portrait of King Mithradates II—the self-styled "King of Kings" who ruled Parthia when it was at its zenith. Inheriting a kingdom in decline that was being pressured from both east and west, Mithradates was able to quickly recover eastern territories lost during his father's reign and then turned his attention to the west where he not only conquered Mesopotamia, but he defeated Armenian king Artavasdes and took his son hostage, ransoming him for 70 valleys! Without question, his moniker "The Great" was well-earned, especially after he concluded the first treaty between Parthia and Rome in 92 B.C. He even met with a delegation of diplomats from China early in his reign and opened the Silk Road for trade with the Far East!

A King With A Nose For Ruling

Located in modern-day Iran, Parthia was born from the ashes of the Macedonian conquests of Alexander the Great. During this period, Greek culture and influence were rapidly spreading—something that can be seen very clearly on this coin's Greek lettering-covered reverse. At first glance it's impossible not to notice the large, extremely hawkish aquiline nose of the famous ruler—clearly Mithradates had a nose for ruling! His thick neck, strong brow, and straight-cut beard are also evident. He is also shown wearing a diadem in his hair and a riding cloak slung is slung over his shoulder.
