The Story Behind This Centuries-Old Roman Silver Coin

Roman Emperor Severus Alexander’s reign was fascinating. He was preceded by his cousin Elagabalus, who was infamous for his depravity, and whose position was secured after their grandmother coerced Elagabalus into adopting young Severus, then arranged for Elagabalus’ assassination.

The Severan Dynasty And The Beginning Of The Crisis Of The Third Century

Cleaning up the decadent mess left behind by his cousin, Severus Alexander went on to become a kind, effective Emperor. Unfortunately, he ruled for just 13 years before getting assassinated himself. Severus Alexander was only 14 when he succeeded Elagabalus in 222. He was a welcome change and had he been given a chance to rule longer, he may have restored the Severan family’s name. His death marked the end of the Severan Dynasty and the beginning of the Crisis of the Third Century, a period in which the Roman Empire was ruled by more than 20 emperors over the course of 50 years, and nearly collapsed under the combined pressures of invasion, civil war, plague, and economic depression.
