AD 30–32 Ancient Judaea Bronze Prutah of Pontius Pilate NGC Choice Fine
One of the Most Eagerly-Sought Ancient Coins in Existence
During the first 60 years the Roman Province of Judaea existed, 13 men served as prefect. Of this baker’s dozen, one man stands head and shoulders above the others in terms of notorious infamy: Pontius Pilate. The Prefect or Governor of Judaea from 26-36 AD, Pilate presided over the trial of Jesus Christ and, though he literally washed his hands of the order to crucify Jesus, he was the one who sentenced him to death.
While Pilate’s name is a household word, little is actually known about the man. In fact, some people even doubted he was a real person until the Pilate Stone, a carved limestone block, was discovered in 1961. The block had a partially intact inscription about Pilate that was part of a larger tribute to Emperor Tiberius, who reigned from 14-37 AD, when most of the events about the life of Jesus described in the New Testament occurred.
For more proof there are these ancient bronze Prutahs struck by Pilate. The last coins minted in Judaea during the life of Jesus, they were used in the markets of Jerusalem on a daily basis during his ministry and could have even been in the pockets and money bags of the money changers Jesus drove out of the Temple! Pilate struck two types of bronze coins from 29-32, each with a distinctive Jewish design on one side and a pagan symbol on the other. The first coin in about 29 or 30, had a Roman libation ladle on the obverse and three ears of barley on the reverse. The second type which is available in this offer was minted between 30 and 32 and features a Roman religious ladle known as a Simpulum and the name of Emperor Tiberius Caesar. The coin’s reverse shows three ears of barley tied together, a border of dots and the name of Empress Julia Livia, the mother of Tiberius and one of the world’s most powerful women.
These ancient coins are a connection to a time in history nearly 2,000 years ago that still affects our lives today! They were there when Pilate’s wife had a dream about Jesus and when Pilate saw no guilt in Jesus but succumbed to mob pressure and had him crucified. Among the most eagerly-sought ancient coins in existence, these bronze Prutahs have also been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being in nice Choice Fine (Ch F) condition. Your coin will also come encapsulated in an acrylic coin holder and displayed in a Story Vault holder that includes an informative storycard about this historic coin.
Over the years Pilate has been portrayed by such notable stars as Basil Rathbone, Telly Savalas, Rod Steiger and David Bowie. Now you can make the actual coin of this enigmatic man the star of your collection, where it is sure to hold a place of honor. Reserve yours now!
