Over 2,300 Years Old—A Tetradrachm From The Kingdom Of Macedon
Here you've got an ancient Greek Silver (AR) Tetradrachm issued by the Kingdom of Macedon that features the portrait of King Philip III, the elder half-brother of Alexander the Great. Despite this seemingly clear claim to succession, Philip III never truly ruled over the Kingdoms of Macedon. Seen as "mentally unfit," he served only as a figurehead, with his actions controlled by his staff and generals.
The Man Who Couldn't Be King
Named Arrhidaeus when he was born, Philip probably would have been first in line for the throne following the assassination of his and Alexander's father Philip II, but his mental and learning disabilities placed him behind Alexander in the line of succession. Fortunately for Philip, Alexander was quite fond of his older half-brother and took him along on all of his campaigns. Alexander did this both to protect Philip's life and to prevent him from being used as a pawn by his enemies. But when Alexander died, that's exactly what happened. Philip was declared king—though he filled the position in name only—and the actual power to rule was held by generals and regents. Philip was executed in 317 BC by Alexander's mother, Olympias, six years after he took the throne.
