336–323 B.C. Macedon Alexander III Silver Drachm NGC Ch XF
Ancient Silver Drachm of Alexander the Great
- COINAGE OF HISTORY’S MOST FAMOUS CONQUEROR – These silver drachms were struck in the name of Alexander the Great, one of the most famous historical figures of all time! Each coin is approximately the size of a modern U.S. dime, weighs about 4 grams, and displays one of the most famous ancient historical figures, Alexander the Great.
- RICH IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY – The coins feature the Greek mythological hero Heracles (Hercules) wearing a lion skin scalp on the obverse, and the Greek god Zeus seated on the reverse.
- ANCIENT COINS IN REMARKABLE CONDITION – Each coin is over 2,000 years old and in remarkable condition – some have even been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) Ancients Division as being in Choice Extremely Fine (Ch XF) condition!
- COMBINATION OF HISTORICAL, MYTHOLOGICAL, AND ECONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE – The relationship to and inscription of Alexander the Great, the Greek mythological figures depicted, and the importance to ancient commerce all combined into one coin make these pieces an excellent representation of the ancient world on several levels.
The son of King Philip II, Alexander III — later known as Alexander the Great — became king before the age of 20, after the assassination of his father. But he was raised well, having been tutored by the great philosopher Aristotle.
As king, Alexander put an end to the Persian Wars that had been waged against the Western World for more than 200 years. It took 13 years of bloody war, but when the weapons were finally lowered Alexander looked upon the Persians as his brothers and offered them a better life.
Though this coin was minted during the lifetime of Alexander, it does not feature his profile. Instead, coins of the time featured gods, goddesses or animals. It was not until after Alexander’s death that coins featured his likeness — though that practice continued for centuries!
This coin is either a “lifetime issue” or was minted immediately after Alexander’s death. Dating between 336 and 323 B.C., this Silver Drachm depicts the Greek hero Heracles on the obverse in his lion headdress, and mighty Zeus seated upon his throne on the reverse.
This ancient treasure has been certified, graded and encapsulated by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being Choice Extremely Fine (Ch XF) condition and will come slabbed in a Story Vault holder with history and illustration.
