2,000-Year-Old Billon Stater From Rome's Conquest of Celtic Britain!

The people who lived in Britain before the Romans arrived around 55 BC were known as the Celts—though they didn't call themselves that. Historians believe that the Celts first arrived on Britain's shores around 1,000 BC and lived there during the Iron Age, the Roman Age, and the post Roman era. Their legacy continues today where examples of the language, culture, and traditions continue to exist.

A Celtic Tribe Who Put Up A Stiff Resistance To Rome

Among the many Celtic tribes living in Britain as Roman legions set about conquering the island were the Durotriges, a band that inhabited parts of Southwest England. Despite the lack of an established capital or seat of power, the Durotriges controlled many powerful hill forts each commanded by local chieftains who put up a stiff resistance to the Roman invaders. During the 1st Century BC, the Durotriges traded with fellow Celtic tribes across the English Channel. By the end of the century, however Rome's conquest of Gaul caused trade to dry up. During this time, they were able to issue their own coins before they were subdued by Roman legions led by the likes of Julius Caesar and Emperor Vespasian which rampaged through the region.
