These Drachms Are 2,000 Years Old!

More than 2,000 years old, these ancient silver coins feature the bust of Apollodotus II, who ruled western parts of the Punjab between 85-65 BC. On the obverse, along with Apollodotus II’s bust, is the Greek legend “Of Apollodotus the Great – Savior and Father Loving King.” The reverse portrays Athena Alkidemos holding a lightning bolt in one hand and the Aegis, in this case a shield, in the other. These coins will arrive in Very Fine (VF) condition which means that raised elements on the coin are still visible despite the coin’s incredible age.

An Ancient Lesson In Politics And Public Relations

Apollodotus referred to himself as Basileos Megalou or “Great King,” a title equivalent to that of an emperor. The title originated in the Punjab region with the kings of Persia. Though he was an important king who reconquered territories from the Scythians and re-established the Indo-Greek kingdom to some extent of its former glory, the size of Apollodotus’ kingdom probably didn’t justify an imperial designation.
